Bahrain’s crown Prince pitches economic resilience as first line of defense

The context lends the meeting particular gravity. In the first quarter of 2026, Iranian attacks directly struck Bahrain’s economy: real GDP contracted 3.8% year-on-year, the oil sector shrank 37.2% due to restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz, and industrial giants such as Alba were forced to declare force majeure. Yet the crown prince hailed the “resilience” of the national economy, turning the security shock into an argument for credibility.

Bahrain showcases that credibility through the numbers. Non-oil activities now account for 90.1% of GDP at constant prices, driven by finance and insurance (+8.6%), real estate (+8.3%) and information technology (+6.2%).

The Economic Development Council specifically identified telecommunications and technology as the most attractive sectors for direct investment, followed by tourism and industry. That is no accident: these are the sectors least exposed to oil shocks and most likely to attract strategic partnerships with technology powers.

Bahraini economic diplomacy does not stop at attracting; it secures. In the midst of the crisis, Manama signed a 2 billion dinar currency swap agreement with the United Arab Emirates, while the central bank released unlimited dinar liquidity for commercial banks.

These instruments are not merely financial: they tie Bahrain into a network of interdependence with its Gulf allies, making any economic aggression more costly for its partners themselves.

The Bahraini model rests on a simple equation: less dependence on hydrocarbons means less vulnerability to regional coercion. And more foreign investment means more objective allies in the kingdom’s prosperity. By turning economics into diplomacy, the crown prince is not sidestepping the security threat; he is neutralizing it through mutual interest.
