Central African Republic: BEAC Launches Free Redemption of Old Coins

The Bank of Central African States (BEAC) officially launched an operation on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, in Bangui to withdraw old coins that were put into circulation between 1958 and 1985. This decision directly affects the daily lives of many Central Africans, as these coins remain widely used in small businesses, transportation, and everyday transactions.

To prevent any financial loss for coin holders, the central bank announced a completely free exchange program, implemented on a phased schedule. The details were presented during a press conference led by the BEAC’s national director in the Central African Republic, Ali Chaibou, alongside his staff.

This measure stems from a resolution by the Ministerial Committee of the Central African Monetary Union (UMAC), a regional body responsible for coordinating the monetary policy of CEMAC member states. Its implementation in the Central African Republic is therefore part of a subregional effort aimed at modernizing and harmonizing currency circulation in the region.

The program consists of several phases. From November 1, 2026, to July 31, 2027, holders will be able to exchange the affected coins at commercial banks, microfinance institutions, and BEAC branches. This period gives citizens sufficient time to comply without rushing.

Between August 1 and October 31, 2027, exchange transactions will be conducted exclusively through the Central Bank. As of November 1, 2027, the process will come to a definitive end, marking the permanent withdrawal of the old series of banknotes from circulation.

This operation aims to stabilize the monetary system, facilitate daily transactions, and strengthen public confidence in the common currency. For Central Africans, the stakes are clear: they must visit exchange locations within the allotted time frame to avoid any devaluation or loss of value.
