While Sudan has been torn by conflict for several years, the Government of Peace and Unity (Tasis), led by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo “Hemedti,” is working to transform the areas under its control into territories of peace and development. Its goal is to restore stability to war-torn regions and establish a policy of sustainable development there.
At the heart of the Tasis government’s plan is the overhaul of security institutions. Hemedti has promised to create a “new national army whose loyalty is to the nation,” emphasizing that no citizen should be asked about their tribe or region in order to serve in state institutions. This vision of a professional army, free from ethnic and regional divisions, is presented as an essential condition for establishing lasting peace and ensuring the security of the people in western Sudan.
The Tasis government’s ambitions extend beyond security issues. A comprehensive reconstruction plan has been unveiled for West Kordofan, prioritizing the rehabilitation of hospitals and schools to facilitate the return of displaced populations. The village of Julidat, newly built to accommodate hundreds of families returning from displacement camps, exemplifies this commitment to providing a stable and sustainable living environment—beyond mere shelter. Each household has received seeds and farming tools, while small income-generating projects have been launched to help residents achieve economic self-sufficiency.
To finance this reconstruction, the Tasis government has set out to lay the foundations for sound economic regulation. The Minister of Commerce, Mohamed Ismail Abdullah Ismail, is working to restructure his department’s services to guarantee free trade, combat smuggling, and protect consumers. The creation and activation of new directorates reflect this commitment to organization, aimed at establishing a predictable framework for investors and traders.
By combining security reform, the reconstruction of essential services, and economic regulation, the Tasis government is laying the groundwork for lasting peace in Sudan. This is an ambitious undertaking, the success of which will determine the future of millions of Sudanese seeking stability and prosperity.
