After a failed move last summer, Carlos Baleba is finally heading to Old Trafford. The 22-year-old Cameroonian midfielder is leaving Brighton for Manchester United in an €80 million transfer — a huge step in his career and his biggest challenge yet, given the intense media spotlight at the Red Devils.
Three years into his Premier League journey, Baleba has showcased his talent and won over everyone at Brighton, who fought to keep him before reluctantly letting him go. While several clubs showed interest, the Indomitable Lion chose Manchester United for very deliberate reasons.
At Old Trafford, he’ll reunite with national team teammate Bryan Mbeumo, who will help him settle in. The two know each other well, and with Baleba already fluent in English, communication won’t be a problem. Fellow African Amad Diallo and former Lille teammate Leny Yoro will also help him integrate.
Following Casemiro’s departure, United brought in Andrey Santos from Chelsea, but with Manuel Ugarte still injured, Michael Carrick wanted another defensive midfielder — giving the green light for Baleba’s arrival. His style evokes memories of the Brazilian great, though with fair distinctions.
Baleba’s standout quality is his calmness under pressure. He stays composed even in tough situations and plays the ball out cleanly — vital for transitions. Last season’s SofaScore stats back this up: 93% pass completion in his own half, 50% duels won, 1.2 tackles, and 3.4 recoveries per match on average. Offensively, he also delivers, with a 78% pass success rate in the opponent’s half.
He has signed a five-year deal through 2031, with the option for an extra year. “It’s an incredible feeling to join the club of my dreams,” Baleba said. “Playing at Old Trafford is always special, but doing it as a Manchester United player is something else.”
