Sudan: Social cohesion between Fellata and Masalit, a challenge for the peace government
The work of a conference on social cohesion between the Fellata and Masalit tribes began on Tuesday, October 6 in Nyala, South Darfur State. The event brings together representatives of the traditional administration, community mediators, officials of the transitional government resulting from the peace agreement as well as representatives of the security services.
The conference aims to contain the repercussions of the events in the town of Gereida, to put an end to the dispute and to strengthen confidence and peaceful coexistence between the two parties.
Mohamed Hassan El-Taishi, a member of the transitional government, stressed that the events in Gereida should not be seen as a mere tribal conflict. He blamed the escalation of tensions on weak state institutions and security services, while stressing the need to resort to the law and bring those responsible to justice.
For their part, the representatives of the Fellata and Masalit reaffirmed their commitment to peace and their willingness to open a new page, calling for strengthening the role of the traditional administration and the State in preventing the recurrence of conflicts and consolidating stability in South Darfur.
