Global cities call for tighter rules on data centres

Forty major cities have joined forces to demand stricter regulation of data centres, as the rapid expansion of digital infrastructure raises concerns over energy consumption, water use, and local economic benefits.

The initiative, led by the C40 Cities network, brings together metropolitan leaders from all continents including Africa to push for a more sustainable approach to data centre development.

Cassie Sutherland, C40’s managing director, said mayors want new rules ensuring that data centres benefit local communities, urban economies, and the environment.

Data centres consume vast amounts of electricity and water to power and cool equipment a reality often overlooked amid the digital boom.

Melbourne Mayor Nicholas Reece argued that investment inflows must serve residents, not just corporations and investors.

The call comes as the artificial intelligence race accelerates data centre construction worldwide.

African cities, where digital infrastructure demand is growing rapidly, stand to be significantly affected.

The mayors hope their collective voice will shape global discussions on the digital economy’s future while limiting its environmental footprint.
