After Adani deal collapse, Kenya turns to China for Airport expansion
Kenya signed a $1.2 billion agreement with China Road and Bridge Corporation to expand Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). The project aims to nearly triple annual passenger capacity from 7.5 million to 22 million.
The 36-month project includes a new terminal building, upgraded infrastructure, and improved operations . Arrival capacity will rise to 31 aircraft per hour from 25 .
Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir said the procurement followed a three-month process after the completion of the JKIA Master Plan in February 2026. More than 40 companies participated in the April pre-bid conference .
The government will borrow up to Sh100 billion and inject Sh50 billion in equity, leveraging future airport revenues .
The project was previously halted after Kenya cancelled a 2024 deal with India’s Adani Group following the indictment of its founder in the United States .
Kenya aims to maintain its role as a regional aviation hub as Ethiopia and Rwanda invest heavily in new airport construction.
A legal challenge filed by the Consumer Federation of Kenya raises questions about transparency and procurement procedures. The High Court certified the petition as urgent on June 19 .
