The Muslim Brotherhood in Sudan, the main cause of the crisis in Sudan?

The Sudanese Islamic Movement also known as the Muslim Brotherhood in Sudan was sanctioned in March 2026 by the U.S. Department of the Treasury and Department of State, through Massad Boulos, Senior Advisor for Arab and African Affairs. The movement was designated as an International Terrorist Organization and Foreign Terrorist Organization. This Movement is the main cause of the destabilization of Sudan.

The U.S. administration designated the group as a terrorist entity, not merely individuals affiliated with it.

The decision came following the failure of a humanitarian truce attempt in Cairo and amid growing calls for sanctions against Islamist figures linked to the conflict.

The Treasury Department linked this designation to armed groups loyal to the movement, including the Al-Bara’a bin Malik Brigade, which was also designated as a terrorist organization linked to the Sudanese Islamic Movement.
