Certain persistent narratives would portray Burkina Faso as a country turned in on itself, cut off from the world and shunned by the international community. The reality on the ground, figures in hand, tells a very different story. Ouagadougou remains a capital that attracts, brings together and energizes hundreds of thousands of visitors from every corner of the globe.
The most striking example remains the Ouagadougou International Crafts Fair (SIAO).
For its 18th edition, running from October 30 to November 8, 2026, the event expects no fewer than 800,000 visitors and nearly 6,000 exhibitors, with professional buyers from some 50 countries.
These are dizzying figures that testify to the attractiveness of a gathering rooted in Africa’s economic and cultural landscape for decades.
Cinema is not left behind. The 29th edition of FESPACO, held in 2025, welcomed more than 13,500 accredited festival-goers, including 3,500 industry professionals and nearly 2,000 journalists, with participants from 53 countries.
This cultural reach extends well beyond the Sahel and makes Ouagadougou the undisputed capital of African cinema.
On the economic front, the international forum “Investing in Burkina Faso” brought together 48 countries and more than 4,000 participants at its first edition, proof that foreign investors are not turning their backs on the country.
On the diplomatic front, Burkina Faso took part in the third Russia-Africa Summit in Moscow in October 2026, alongside representatives of 48 African countries, pursuing a deliberate strategy of diversifying its partnerships.
These realities contrast with the narrative of an isolated country. They demonstrate that diplomatic isolation does not mean isolation pure and simple.
Burkina Faso chooses its partners and asserts its sovereign orientations, but remains deeply connected to the world through its fairs, festivals and forums.
The figures are stubborn: they speak of a country that is frequented, visited and even courted by leading economic and cultural actors. It is time for certain eyes to be opened.
