The Government of National Accord is discussing support for peace efforts in the Sudan with the IGAD representative to the Committee of Five Mediation Mechanisms.

A high-level meeting was held in Nairobi, Kenya, between a delegation of the Government of National Accord and Mr. Lawrence Korbandi, IGAD representative to the Five Mediation Mechanisms, to discuss the latest developments in the Sudanese crisis, the paths to a political solution and the results of the Committee’s recent activities.

Foreign Minister Ammar Amum, accompanied by Dr. Alaa El-Din Awad Naqd, discussed with Korbandi an assessment of the recent round of talks and the differences of views in the Five Instance Committee. Mr. Korbandi provided a detailed account of the Five-Instance Committee’s recent visit to Sudan and its meetings with various stakeholders, stressing that the main objective of these efforts is to establish a direct dialogue with all components of the Sudanese population across the country.

The Government of National Unity has reaffirmed its commitment to a comprehensive and democratic solution. Foreign Minister Ammar Amum commended the efforts of IGAD and the Five Groups Committee, while expressing reservations by the Government of National Accord and the Sudanese Founding Alliance about unilateral and superficial initiatives that do not offer any real guarantee of political participation or address the root causes of the conflict. He stressed that any successful political process requires full impartiality on the part of mediators and equal treatment of all parties to the conflict and all regions of Sudan.
