The Civil Front to End War and Restore Democracy (Civil Front) calls for an independent international investigation into Sudan’s chemical weapons allegations and grave violations. Justice for victims must prevail.

Date: July 23, 2026

The Civil Front to End War and Restore Democracy follows with deep concern and close attention the reports and allegations of serious violations of international humanitarian law and international human rights law, including allegations concerning the use of chemical weapons in Sudan. Given the gravity of these accusations and the international legal responsibilities they may entail, the Front considers that they require an independent, impartial, and transparent international investigation to establish the facts professionally and to hold accountable any person whose involvement is legally established, in accordance with international law.

The Front emphasizes that any use of chemical weapons, when established by legal and technical evidence, constitutes a serious violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention and may be qualified as an international crime calling for prosecution and accountability. No act of this nature shall be tolerated or benefit from impunity.

In this regard, the Civil Front calls on the international community to act urgently to:

  1. Establish an independent and impartial international commission of inquiry, under the auspices of the United Nations and in coordination with the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), mandated to investigate all allegations concerning the use of chemical weapons and violations committed against civilians.
  2. Guarantee international investigation teams unrestricted access to all relevant sites, enable them to collect evidence, and ensure the protection of witnesses and victims in accordance with international standards.
  3. Bring to justice all those responsible for war crimes, crimes against humanity, or serious violations of international law, without distinction or exception.
  4. Call on the United Nations Security Council, the African Union, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, the European Union, the United Nations, and all international partners to assume their legal and moral responsibilities to protect civilians and ensure that perpetrators of these violations do not benefit from impunity.

The Civil Front to End War and Restore Democracy reaffirms that justice, accountability, and respect for international law constitute indispensable foundations for the establishment of a just and lasting peace in Sudan. Any credible political approach must be based on establishing the truth, repairing the harm suffered by victims, and prosecuting those responsible for violations, in order to prevent their recurrence in the future.
