Liberia: How President Joseph Boakai is restoring the country’s diplomatic image on the world stage
Liberia is reviving its vocation as a leading nation on the international scene. Under the leadership of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, the country regained a credibility that seemed to have eroded over the years. « Before the election of President Boakai, the country had a terrible international image. Our foreign relations were bad, » the information minister recently said. A fact that is now a thing of the past.
On June 3, 2025, Liberia was elected a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2026-2027 term, with a clear score: 181 votes out of 187. A victory that marks the country’s return to this body after more than six decades of absence, the last presence dating back to 1961. As President Boakai pointed out, this election « validates Liberia’s commitment to international peace and our willingness to contribute meaningfully at the highest level. »
For Emmanuel S. Wettee, president of the All-Liberian Conference on Dual Citizenship, this seat is « a major diplomatic step » and « a victory for all Liberians ». Liberia intends to bring the voice of Africa and the developing world to the Forum, drawing on its own experience of national reconciliation.
At the same time, the Boakai administration has worked to resume projects suspended by technical and financial partners. The construction of the military hospital, the Chinese airlift and the national broadcasting station have been relaunched. The government also secured the reaffirmation of the country’s eligibility for a second Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact, a sign of renewed confidence from the United States.
At the regional level, Liberia affirms its willingness to play an active role in ECOWAS. President Boakai called for « stronger regional unity and concrete action in the face of growing challenges, » pleading for the organization to « go beyond declarations to bring tangible benefits to its citizens. » The country also honored the contributing States of the ECOMOG force during its independence celebrations, recalling its commitment to peace and reconciliation.
By positioning itself as a « principled and trustworthy voice » in the Security Council, Liberia is restoring its image in the long term and reconnecting with its vocation as a peacebuilder in West Africa.
