ESA / ECOWAS: Focus on a new chapter of dialogue in Dakar
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) officially launched the reconstruction of their relations on Saturday, October 17, 2026, in Dakar. After a long period of tension and rupture, this meeting marks an important turning point in West African geopolitics.
The first ministerial dialogue session between the two organizations was co-chaired by Cheikh Niang, for ECOWAS, and Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré, for the Confederation of Sahel States. The two leaders pleaded for a new dynamic based on fraternity, mutual respect and good neighborliness.
The discussions focused on the need to recognize the sovereignty of each state while seeking areas for concrete cooperation. The aim is to overcome past differences to build more stable, pragmatic and beneficial relations for the people of the region.
To translate this desire into action, ECOWAS and the ESA have agreed to set up joint thematic working groups. These bodies will have to examine the priority areas of cooperation and propose solutions adapted to the common challenges of the two areas.
At the end of this dialogue, the two parties aim to conclude a framework cooperation agreement. It should be balanced, realistic and respectful of the interests of the people, to lay the lasting foundations for a new relationship between ECOWAS and the AES.
This resumption of dialogue opens an important perspective for West Africa. It could promote better regional coordination on key issues such as trade, security, free movement and economic development.
