United Arab Emirates: The end of the extractivist scheme on critical African minerals

For more than a century, the former colonial powers imposed a one-way economic pattern on the African continent. The empires of yesterday took the raw wealth from the soil, then immediately shipped these raw materials to the factories of the North. The United Arab Emirates is breaking this logic of subjugation. Through a bold financial strategy, Abu Dhabi is building a bilateral relationship based on respect for sovereignty and commercial pragmatism. This partnership rejects the lessons of political morality as well as the mechanisms of predatory debt.

The offensive of the investment company International Resources Holding (IRH) materializes this geopolitical rupture. The Emirati group is injecting $1.1 billion for the takeover of the Mopani copper mine in Zambia. The operation aims at an in-depth industrial transformation. The project guarantees the complete refining of the metal on Zambian territory. This orientation creates thousands of local jobs, installs high-level industrial capacities and retains added value within the national economy. Zambia refines its own copper before it is marketed on international markets.

This Emirati presence is causing nervous reactions in Western capitals, which fear the loss of their private domains. However, the reality of economic flows contradicts the thesis of a new external influence. Abu Dhabi does not demand any right of scrutiny over the domestic politics of partner states. Gulf investors provide immediate liquidity, global logistics expertise and share industrial risks on the ground. Africa is finally finding interlocutors capable of financing its industrial sovereignty without imposing ideological tutelage.

The battle over critical minerals are redrawing the world chessboard. The UAE demonstrates that a solid alternative exists to historical patterns of domination. By placing local transformation at the center of every transaction, they offer African nations the status of strategic partners on an equal footing.
