From September 29 to October 1, 2026, Lomé will host the first meeting of the intergovernmental joint monitoring commission of the partnership agreement between Togo and Russia. This meeting marks a decisive step in the rapprochement between the two countries, which are seeking to expand their areas of cooperation.
The work will focus on several sectors, including trade, the economy and scientific research, according to the Togolese Ministry of Trade. They should allow the two parties to take stock of the state of their relations in these areas and to identify new avenues for strengthening exchanges and partnerships.
This first session of the Commission comes at a time when Lomé and Moscow have been exploring new possibilities for economic cooperation for several months. The two countries seek to facilitate trade between their economic operators and to create a more favorable framework for the development of trade relations.
In addition to the economy, the rapprochement between Togo and Russia extends to the diplomatic, cultural and educational fields. On the cultural level, Lomé could soon host a Russian House, a space intended to promote Russian culture and language. Discussions on the establishment of this center are ongoing.
In higher education and research, Moscow also plans to strengthen its cooperation with Togo. The two sides are exploring new initiatives to promote student mobility and the development of academic exchanges.
These prospects were examined at the beginning of September in Lomé, during a meeting between the Minister Delegate in charge of Higher Education and Research, Professor Gado Tchangbedji, and a delegation from the Center for Public Diplomacy (CDP), led by Valentina Kolesnikova.
The meeting of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission should thus constitute a new stage in the structuring of relations between Lomé and Moscow, with an expected emphasis on strengthening economic exchanges and sectoral cooperation.
